4/1/2007: NM Drift Series Round 1 at Sandia Motor Speedway

Perfect day for drifting saw 500 spectators and over 20 cars including Professional Drivers from Enjuku Racing and NM Drift participate in the first round of the NM Drift Series. Supporting vendors such as AJ Tires, Nitro 2 Go, SpeedDreams, Next Level Customs and Synergy Coatings created an event atmosphere on the Midway with their displays of products and automotive enthusiasm for the sport of Drifting.

Trophies and gift certificates for more parts were courtesy of Enjuku Racing who also changed a ton of tires for the competitors. Drivers had 3 courses to choose from. One course ran through turns 1-6 on the south side of the Sandia Motor Speedway while course number 2, the competition course, was run through the ovals. You will have to see it to believe the great driving these amateurs did in the first ever judged drifting competition in NM.

Judging these competitors was Head Judge Ryan Hampton, assisting Ryan was judges John Yim, Ben Reyes, Bill Sherman and Caio Campos. Big thanks to these guys as they had the difficult decision of picking the winner.

Winning the first ever NM Drift Series Round 1 was Adam "Skippy" McMahon from Colorado representing Mac Autosport. Coming in second was Aaron Loosey from San Antonio, TX and rounding out the podium was Jason Slee from Colorado also. Big congrats to these guys for standing out and showing quality drifting and skill. Coming in 4th and earning an advanced license was Kyle Armstrong. The top 4 were issued Advance licenses for Drift Day and are allowed to practice tandem and compete in tandem considering all safety requirements are met.

All the results and qualifying scores are below, thanks from NM Drift for starting the season off with a great event at Sandia Motor Speedway. Dont miss Round 2 for more Amateur competition and Professional Demonstrations.

3/20/07: New Look NM Drift appears at NOPI Phoenix: With the new look and newly sponsored tires; NM Drift takes the cars to Phoenix to shake the cars down and get them ready for Long Beach Formula Drift. Despite all the changes: The NM Drift Car of Gary Lang clocked the highest entry speed of 83mph but bowed out in qualifying scoring 2 mechanical no runs. Ben scored on all three of his q-runs and fell on the bubble of #17. Not a bad weekend as the cars need minor fixing of some issues, but look for the cars to be stong in Long Beach!

3/5/2007: Maxxis Tires and NM Drift join drifting forces for the 2007 season of Drifting! More to come including the complete new look of NM Drift for 2007.

3/3/2007: Pre Tech to Rd 1 and Meet at NM Drift: Ask your questions, check out the cars, get your car checked out, register for the NM Drift Series, see your competition and just have fun.

8840 Susan St Se Albuquerque, NM (Wyoming near the base)

All areas have been cleaned, painted and prepared to finish off the new look. Gary's car is due to be finished on the 16th at which time we will tear it apart and complete all upgrades and interior/exterior cleanup by end of February.

1/27/2007: All the new body kits are at Maurers collision for paint. Gary's car is awaiting rear quarter extraction from tap of wall at Irwindale. Once completed we can begin fitting new body kit. Laughlin, NV was the site of the Pro Am Nationals this past weekend. The top amateurs from the South, East, North and West made pilgramage to the Colorado River and donated tires, bumpers and even cars to the town which layed the track down on a Thursday and let us out on it Friday. Friday was a practice day for both the Amateurs and the 0 point FD license holders. Going into Saturday, the premium was on not wrecking the car as many suffered the wall while trying to impress the judges. A ski jump for the cars made for some really exciting aerial displays of just how well your car was built. Only a few suffered broken axles from the jump and they were able to return. Around 8 cars hit the barrier on the big sweeper. Most made it back, despite obvious visual distortion of the car.

NM Drift Group had both drivers in this event. Gary Lang qualified in Houston for the Pro Am Finals and Ben Reyes was a competitor for the FD 0 Point licensing. Gary Lang was first up on Saturday. The NMDG Silvia was having some issues throughout the weekend but it did not affect qualifying on Saturday. Gary qualified 11th and went up against Doug Van Den Brink where the silvia had its issues and could only get out of the way of the Mustang.

Sunday saw both NMDG cars in action. Again Gary was up first in qualification. The car was horrible but the final run earned an 86 and another qualification @ #11. Ben was up in the last group and threw down 3 solid runs to qualify for tandem eliminations. Both NMDG cars make the final top 16 of the weekend and earned at least Provisional Licenses for 2007 Formula Drift Series.

Eliminations saw Ben Reyes vs. Jon Russakof; Jon R moved on and Ben, hampered by loss of the clutch, was helpless to move on. The NMDG american style car was running very well and very consistent. Unfortunately the clutch was no good anymore and could not even hold the car in the trailer for loading. Guess we gotta fix that!! At least it waited till the end.

Eliminations saw Gary Lang vs. Tommy Suelll; Tommy moved on after a very tight battle with both drivers each making a mistake in the first tandem, going to a one more time where the call went Tommy's way but the action was tight with both cars fighting hard to out do the other. The NMDG Silvia worked great through all four runs and seemed to come to life for a battle with a great driver in Tommy.

Previous Updates

10/28/06: NEXT: We will be heading out to Irwindale Speedway (HOD "House of Drift") for the qualifier #3 to compete in the Pro Am Finals. Already qualified for Day 2, FD Zero Point Licensing Day, NMDG will be heading out to qualify Ben Reyes for Day 1 competition in Laughlin. Gary Lang qualified earlier in the Houston qualifier in July. Details below on Pro Am Finals.

Sidenote: Adam "Skippy" Mcmahon: Going for the ride in the NMDG transport, Skippy will be participating also in the Pro Am qualifier. This will be his first time ever at the HOD and this experience is sure to change him forever. Skippy is a drifter for Mac Autosport in Colorado and has his Drift Day Advanced license, which he obtained at the first ever Drift Day 1 NM in June of this year. Skippy has shown the dedication and drive to become a top drifter, this experience will be an initiation into what is required throughout the competition world of Drifting. More than anything, NMDG wants to support the drifiting hopefuls and will continue that either through its drift clinics, instruction and events for 2007.

10/15/06: Top Battle Finale: Again the Top Battle Series takes the action to Horse Theif Mile at Willow Springs International Raceway. This was Round 5 of 5. After a dismal Round 4 and falling 30 points behind 3rd place, a top finish was necessary to regain points. This is the second time out to Horse Theif Mile and the track is a great canyon type of Togue Drifting. With dirt and rocks surrounding the paved track, a premium is put on drifting the whole track in order to stay on the track further down the course. Practice was short and I put an emphasis on finding a line that was fast and on point. Without going into a million details, I found a great entry where I initiated in 3rd gear and then placed the car on point throughout qualifyng. Moving up and growig in confidence I made my first Top 4 Appearance in the Series and despite some dirt on the track altering my final runs, I scored high enough for 3rd place and a podium finish for NM Drift.

10/7/06: Co Drift. Org has invited NM Drift Group along with Colorado based sponsor 9 Second Racing to do several Tandem Drift Exhibitions and be judges for their Colorado Competition. The people and drifters of Colorado have alot of heart and NM Drift is extremely excited to venture the short trip North for a weekend of Fun Drifting and getting to watch the local Co Drift contingent battle it out. Look out world, something about that thin air in Colorado makes the blood pump pure drift muscle, as we witnessed a great progression in drift ability the last time we were in CO for their Drift Clinic..

10/28/06: Pro Am West Qualifier: Final four spots are fought for in the House of Drift, Irwindale. These final four spots will finish the field for the first ever Pro Am Final in Laughlin, NV.

9/23/06: Just Drift Round 4: Going in, in 4th coming out in 6th place in the series ranking. Round 4 saw a very good NM Drift Car until the clutch began slipping and blowing a turbo oil return line. Thanks to Team Verena Mei for the oil that allowed Gary Lang to get the car back out for qualifying. Qualifying was'nt meant to be despite a clean qualifying run. Overall Gary Lang ended up 19th dropping 2 spots overall in the series to 6th. With Round 5 coming up soon, the margin for error is slim and with only 30 points seperating NM Drift from 3rd place in the series, NM Drifts goal for the HTM is to be consistent and give the judges exactly what they want.

8/10/06: Enchanment Productions: Pro Am Houston Video Compilation of NM Drift Group. Many thanks to Rafael, who travelled the 3 days with us to capture a fun event filled with losing a motor and a 4th place finish and invite to the Pro Am Finals for NM Drift's Gary Lang.

La Marque (Houston), TX – The Formula Drift Pro-Am Series kicked off its first event in Houston under the direction of Daily Drifter sponsored by SPL Parts and with the help of the Underground Lifestyles Car Show and Concert. Over 40 drivers attended the inaugural event that was held at Gulf Greyhound Park. Temperatures well into the nineties coupled with the Houston humidity made for an extremely hot day. When the dust settled the top eight qualifiers were named and they will be invited to the Pro-Am finals:

These drivers will go on to compete against the other regional top 8 drivers for the title of national Formula Drift Pro-Am Champion. For more information regarding the Pro-Am Series log on to: www.proamdrift.com, www.formulad.com, www.dailydrifter.com

Drift Day 1 NM:

Drift Day 1 NM is in the books.

3 advance drivers, 25 participants and over 300 spectators at the event.

Every news channel covered the event and showed that NM wants to see more of these events. It is not often that motorsports gets complete coverage from all the networks. Lets give em what they want!!

Thanks go to the Workers, Sponsors and contributors of NMDG and Drift Association.

Thanks go out to the drivers and spectators for making this one of the most fun events to hit NM.

Thanks go to the Instructors for Drift 101/DD1NM and the many ride alongs they gave throughout the day, I hope everyone was able to take advantage of their talents and techniques and improve throughout the day.

Without everyone this could not have happened and I am truly grateful to everyone that worked, participated and enjoyed this first installment of Drifting in NM.

Recognition goes to David Souvannavisouth(NM), Adam McMahon(CO) and Ed Johnson(CA) for proving they have what it takes to become Advance Drift Day Drivers. *time to get a cage David S

It was alot of fun to have this happen in NM and your support showed that it was possible to have it happen here. We are beginning the planning for #2 and I hope to have some info within a couple of weeks.

RU ready for another?

BTW: Thanks to everyone who helped us clean up the lot after the day was done. Thanks to everyone who kept their pits clean and kept the trash in the bags. The lot looked great after everyone was gone and that goes along way to showing the class with which these events can happen and the class of the people who participated.

Thanks

Gary

Drift Day Comp #6 and Drift Invite Competition: April 28th thru 29th was a dual event aimed at combining a Rim of the World Rally event and Drifting. Day one was Friday and an intermediate/beginner event. The event saw many drivers who are serious about the competition end of drifting and want to be involved in some of the major series. NM Drift Group was a participant in several ways. The competition saw Gary Lang compete in single qualifying runs while finishing 12th overall. Ben Reyes was excluded due to D1GP license status.

Earlier in the day NM Drift Group took advantage of early arrival as both Ben and Gary tested for Advanced Licensing from Drift Day. The advance license is a recognizable license allowing NM Drift Group the ability to run Tandem practice at all Drift Days. Many, probably all, of the Pro's today have Advanced licenses from Drift Day. 5 runs only, showing car control, completion of full course and proper line. Both Ben and Gary recieved their Drift Day Advanced Licenses on Friday.

The Drift Invite was a 2 part event on Saturday the 29th. The first part was a team tandem competition. NM Drift Group teamed up with Chris Milano. The 3 car tandem was very exciting and definitely a pressure packed competition as you have 3 cars judged in 1 run. 3 chances to get a deduction or mistake. Team BOSO and their 2 RX-7's along with an S-14 won the Team Tandem as they did very well mirroring each other to the win. Congrats!!

The second portion of the event was a Pro Invite Competition. Drift Invite opened the competition up to caged drivers who were participants in the tandem competition and some of the competitors from Day One. Qualifying was a 3 run, all judged, and best of 3 counted. Qualifying saw Ben Reyes taking the 11 spot and Gary Lang taking the number 6 spot. Next was the Top 16 bracket, again NM Drift Group met in the first round. This is becoming all to familiar as Ben and Gary have met in the Top 16 first round 2 events in a row. We are of course trying to get on opposite sides of the bracket so we can meet further down the line. This time Ben and Gary's tandem runs went to a "one more time". Gary Lang advanced to the Top 8 to meet Tanner Foust, AEM 350Z, in the 2nd round. Tanner Foust then advanced to Top 4 and eventually to #2.

Video is Here!!

Drift Invite Top 16 Bracket

Drift Fest Rd 1 @ LVMS: April 22nd thru 23rd is the first round of an up and coming Drift Series. This series looks to make a push at competing with Formula Drift with a 9 event series. NM Drift Group is excited at a format that will allow for more involvement and drifting while allowing drivers to give their sponsors another avenue of exposure.

4/24/06 Update: Ben Reyes takes #3 spot after meeting his Teammate, me, in the first round, advancing to meet another Teammate, Collin Frost, advancing to meet Tommy Suell who would end up second overall. Andrew Hately, Tommy Suell and Ben Reyes make your top 3, Team ModiRide makes up 2 of the Top 3 and Cooper Tires 2 of the top 3. Congratulations to all three and the organizers at Drift Fest for making the 2 day event a true Drift Fest. Tons of drifting and lots of Fun. Maybe next time Ben and I can get on opposite sides of the bracket and meet in the Final.

3D Event @ Fontana: What a cool event. We got to Drag Race, Drift and Autocross all in one single run. How? Fontana is How. The parking lot, #12, is huge. We drag raced down the poles to a big right hand sweeping 3rd gear drift continuing and completing a drift section immediately into a timed autocross portion. The whole run was very fast and you were never below mid 2nd gear through much of the course. I hope this event catches on and continues as it stresses the importance of a complete car and balanced one at that. Thanks to Drift Association for puttin on the Qualifier Saturday and driving 3 hours north to set this one up also. Amazing, these guys are all about giving people, drifters and drivers, what they want. Good Job Drift Association.

FD Qualifier Rd#3: With a dry day finally, Formula D chose to set up a demanding course complete with walls and representation similar to that of Long Beach. 11 wrecks later, k-rails knocked over by cars hitting them so fast, and the inevitable rain we had a realistic idea of what life at FD would be like. Both NM Drift cars escaped fully intact as we chose to run a safe morning line which prooved to be the downfall. Unfortunately NM Drift Group will not be making the trip to LB since we unsuccessfully campaigned for FD licenses. The lack of time with new setups, rain and track surfaces colder than preferred, we were unable to get down the consistency the judges were looking for. While having successful runs and looking to move on, NM Drift found itself on the outside looking in. With every closed door new possibiities arise. We will have some new announcements coming soon and we will very much be involved with everything out there. This is an opening we did not expect and the relief of pressure we were under is a welcomed one. We will be looking to have more fun and get a lot more involved in the community of New Mexico and hopefully get more of us out there in the year to come.

Update: Red car is in the hands of Maurer Collision. Kind enough to get the red car in the shop right away and begin straightening a 48mm bend to the passenger side, 2 inches of rise in the rear rame and a front end 11 mm off center. The red car will be a go for San Diego, likely without some paint, but up to standards.

Red Car Repair Photos: clickhere

D1GP Rd #1: Thursday practice proved to be painful as Ben Reyes in the Red NM Drift car spun and hit the infield wall. Also compounding the agony the front turned into the wall bending much of the front suspension. Thanks go out to Ross Petty and Chris Milano for donation of parts and effort. After replacing the power steering rack, lower A-arm, tie rod and tension rod, we were able to get Ben back out for the Friday qualifier. Unfortunately, this was not to be NM Drift's weekend as the hit to the wall and a sight onsite alignment made the car difficult to perform. This was Ben's first crash in 2 years and the 2nd major crash for NM Drift Group as last August the white car was rolled by Gary.

Just Drift Top Battle Rd#1: After a frustrating weekend in Houston, NM Drift Group travelled to Willow Springs California for the first round of an Amateur series called Just Drift Top Battle. No rain and a new course proved to be no problem. Ben Reyes, becuase of D1 Liscenture, was unable to compete and supported Gary Lang throughout the day. Willow Springs was an Oval course with a center section running through the middle making a H type appearance to the track. The day began with 48 drivers, 6 practice runs moving into 3 qualifying runs for the Top Half ( eventually turned into Top 16 due to time constraints). Gary Lang made top 16 and moved from there with his best 2 runs moving him into the Top 8. After a bit of confusion, the judges decided on a Top 8 battle, with little time and the car loaded up, we quickly unstrapped the car and made it out for the final 2 runs. The last 2 runs missed the mark and turned a day that belonged to NM Drift Group into a 7th place finish overall. While happy with the overall day, it was diappointing that it ended in a rush and a line just off.

FD Qualifier Rd#2: Let it rain and rain and rain. With a surface falling apart and 300 plus horsepower, NM Drift Group wished Houston would have been a little more friendly. The track was a simple J-turn with some s-turns. Without the rain puddles and a track that felt like an oil slick when you tried to throw the car into second gear, things might have been different. Without sugar coating NM Drift ended up without licenses for the Formula Drift Series and a frustrated feeling of watching 2 rounds of qualifiers go to the rain gods. Qualifier Rd 3 will be March 18th and the final chance to deliver what the judges want. Let's keep the rain away from this one and let the courses reflect somewhat of what Formula Drift has been about, Speed and Line.

FD Qualifier Rd#1: Slippery when Wet. Let it be said that rain = wrecks. With many cars kareening into the wall, FD's idea of safety turned into a slippery nightmare for some and a sluggish looking run was mainly the drift served up. 4 qualifiers, Hats Off, with 5 reserves for San Diego made their way into FD. Next up will be the Houston qualifier where NM Drift will have a month to get used to the new horsepower. The course made no representation of what FD was last year and leaves many wondering what to expect. Will the FD courses be fast and then turn into1st gear power drifts or will they be similar to Atlanta and Irwindale of old?

Ben Reyes takes #6 qualifier out of the D1GP Drivers Search and works his way to top 16 USA qualified D1GP Drivers. What a weekend as Ben was silky smooth qualifying day taking the NM Drift Group Red 240sx deep into day 2. There are only a few words to describe how proud I am of Ben and my Team NM Drift Group. This is truly a small team working its A____s off using every resource it can. We want to thank our Sponsors who have been there, are still there and our new Sponsors who will be there now.

Thanks to Modiride USA for their dedication and hard work to get the cars ready for some really big events. Drift Day 27 and a test day put on by the Pirates of Land Ho. Big thanks to Milano Motorsport, Chris Kregorian and his staff, for their dedication to NM Drift Group in setting the cars up for us. While there are not enough words in the dictionary to express how well these last two weeks came together, I can say expect big things from NM Drift Group next year.
